As Beşiktaş continues preparations for the 2026-27 season, the club has brought in a significant addition to its goalkeeping department. Miguel Augusto Palma Espinha Ferreira, born on July 20, 1993 in Lisbon and standing 190 cm tall, has signed with the Istanbul side after departing North Macedonian giants HC Vardar 1961.
A member of the Portuguese national team pool, Espinha's career has spanned a remarkably wide footprint across European handball. Having come through Benfica's youth system and guarded the club's first-team goal for many years, the goalkeeper went on to play in Spain for Bada Huesca and REBI Cuenca, and in France for Cesson Rennes Métropole HB. In the summer of 2024, he continued competing in European Cup competition with Vardar.
His time in Spain, in particular, drew notice. During the 2023-24 ASOBAL season, Espinha was listed among the All Star Team goalkeeper candidates alongside globally recognized names such as Emil Nielsen and Gonzalo Pérez de Vargas, and upon joining Cuenca he was described as a player "expected to be a reference point in goal." According to EHF European League data, he posted a save efficiency of around 28-32 percent per season with Vardar.
With this transfer, Beşiktaş's goalkeeping unit gains an experienced addition alongside Matej Asanin and Enis Yatkın. How playing time is distributed among this three-goalkeeper setup will be one of the key storylines heading into the season.
