Following a Wild Card decision by the International Handball Federation (IHF), Turkey's Men's National Handball Team has secured its first-ever berth at the World Championship, to be held in Germany from January 13 to 31, 2027.

The tournament, featuring 32 nations, will hold its final at the Lanxess Arena in Cologne. The national team's group-stage opponents will be determined today at 6:00 PM during the draw ceremony at Munich's Hofbräuhaus. Turkey will be seeded in Pot 4, alongside Qatar, Kuwait, Japan, Algeria, Angola, Uruguay and another Wild Card recipient.

Turkey's success in securing this berth was driven not only by its performance during the qualification process but also by diplomatic efforts behind the scenes. Selected from among 12 candidate nations that included Hungary, Switzerland, Austria and South Korea, Turkey has converted its recent international momentum into a concrete achievement.

THF President Mesut Çebi commented: "This achievement sends a powerful message from Turkish handball to the world. The progress we have made from youth categories all the way up to our senior national teams, along with the successful results we have achieved in international competitions, is now being clearly recognized by the global handball community."

Turkish handball faces an unprecedented density of national team competitions in the coming period. The Women's U20 National Team will compete at the World Championship in China in June 2026, while the Men's U18 and U20 teams will play in the European Championships in Serbia and Romania respectively in July 2026. The Women's National Team will take the stage as hosts at the Women's European Championship in Antalya in December 2026.

Çebi also revealed the federation's next objective: "Our target now is for our Men's National Team to qualify for the European Championship for the first time in our history. We believe we will make history once again by advancing from a qualifying group that includes Norway, Austria and Georgia."
